Whois lookup

  • It is a utility used to look up information on domain names.
  • It show us the contact information as well as some technical information such as the DNS used for service.
  • It also provides with the name of the registrar (such as GoDaddy), the status of the domain, and important dates (e.g., the domain creation date and expiration date).


How whois lookup used?

  • Network administrators use whois data to identify and fix problems.
  • Whois verification can even be utilized to combat spam or fraud, as administrators can track down registrants who post illegal content or participate in phishing scams.
  • ICANN’s agreements protects domain registrants by prohibiting the use of whois listings for marketing or spam purposes.

  • When a domain name is registered, ICANN requires that personal information including your full name, address, phone number and email address be provided.
  • This information is then made visible to the public via a whois lookup. In fact, its available to everyone including marketers, spammers and even identity thieves.
