Resolution

  • Resolution is the number of pixel (indivisual point of color) contained of displayed monitor, which expressed in terms of the number of pixel on the horizontal axis and number of pixel on the vertical axis.
  • If an image has M rows and N columns, then its resolution can be defined as M * N.

Types of Resolution

Pixel resolution

  • Pixel resolution can be defined by total no of pixel across column and total no of pixel across row.
  • The higher the pixel resolution, the higher is the quality of image.

Spatial resolution
  • Spatial resolution states that the clarity of an image cannot be determined by the pixel resolution.
  • We can not compare two images with different size. We have to take two images with same size.

Spectral resolution
  • Spectral resolution has the ability to resolve spectral features and bands into their separate components.
  • multicolor images have higher spectral resolution than normal color images.

Temporal resolution
  • The ability to detect two separate event in time, and correctly display them as separate.

Radiometric resolution
  • Radiometric resolution determines how finely a system can represent or distinguish differences of intensity, and is usually expressed as a number of levels or a number of bits, for example 8 bits or 256 levels that is typical of computer image files.
  • The higher the radiometric resolution, the better subtle differences of intensity or reflectivity can be represented, at least in theory.
