Internal vs External IP

Internal IP

  • It is also called as local IP address.
  • The internal IP address is the address that is assigned by your local network router.
  • It begins with 192.168.x.x. The last digit will increment with each new device that connects.
  • These IP addresses can only be seen by other computers in your local network and not by any computers connected in an external network such as on the internet.


  • To find a internal IP address go to the command prompt type ipconfig.


External IP

  • It is also known as public IP.
  • A public IP address is the address that is assigned to a computing device to allow direct access over the internet.
  • A web server, email server and any server device directly accessible from the internet are candidate for a public IP address.
  • A public IP address is globally unique, and can only be assigned to an unique device.
  • To find your external IP address do a search for your IP address in google.


Differences

Internal IP External IP
The internal IP address is used on your local internal network. The external IP address is used when communicating with machines on the Internet.
It is private IP address. It is a public IP address.
It allow direct access to a local device. It allow direct access to the internet.
