Advantages of AM
- AM radio are relatively easy to detect with simple equipment, even if the signal is not very strong.
- It has a narrower bandwidth than FM, and wider coverage compared with FM radio.
- AM is simple and cheaper in cost.
Disadvantages of AM
- AM is the signal which is affected by electrical storms and other radio frequency interference.
- The radio transmitters can transmit sound waves of frequency up to 15 kHz.
- Noise appears more in AM transmission because it affects the amplitude of the carrier wave.
Advantages of FM
- FM radio has better sound quality than AM radio due to higher bandwidth.
- Well defined service areas for given transmitter power.
- Less radiated power.
Disadvantages of FM
- These are more local and cannot be transmitted over long distance.
- FM requires a fairly more complicated receiver and transmitter than an AM signal does.
- FM is more complex and expensive.
