AM vs FM

Advantages of AM

  • AM radio are relatively easy to detect with simple equipment, even if the signal is not very strong.
  • It has a narrower bandwidth than FM, and wider coverage compared with FM radio.
  • AM is simple and cheaper in cost.

Disadvantages of AM

  • AM is the signal which is affected by electrical storms and other radio frequency interference.
  • The radio transmitters can transmit sound waves of frequency up to 15 kHz.
  • Noise appears more in AM transmission because it affects the amplitude of the carrier wave.

Advantages of FM

  • FM radio has better sound quality than AM radio due to higher bandwidth.
  • Well defined service areas for given transmitter power.
  • Less radiated power.

Disadvantages of FM

  • These are more local and cannot be transmitted over long distance.
  • FM requires a fairly more complicated receiver and transmitter than an AM signal does.
  • FM is more complex and expensive.
